What is your cost to company?

Business Standard has a nice story, "Mumbai`s media Mahabharat", that discusses the media war that is beginning in Mumbai. This is because three new newspapers are starting here, and they are poaching journalists from the existing newspapers, and salaries are shooting through the roof. A friend of mine who is a senior journalist at an existing biggie told me of how his boss called him into his cabin and asked him: "So, what is your cost to company?"

My friend told him.

"Okay," the reply came. "From now on, you get 20,000 more."

Print journalists have always been paid badly, and I'd assumed that only the entry of foreign media could change that. Clearly I was wrong. This is a fine time to be a journalist in Mumbai, and many wild stories of salaries being doubled and so on are floating around madly, along with other juicy gossip. Sadly, Mediaah! is defunct, or we'd get it all there.

Postscript: The "20,000 more" was a reference to monthly salary, not annual. Obviously.
