Prem Panicker: the original cricket blogger
What is a blog but a collection of posts with timelines? By that definition the first cricket blogger, long before the word 'blogs' existed, was Prem Panicker. Panicker, the managing editor of Rediff.com, became a bit of a cult figure among cricket lovers in the mid and late 1990s with his prolific and insightful writing, and used to enthrall readers with ball-by-ball commentary that was, well, like a blog on steroids. (Cricinfo also had ball-by-ball commentary, but Panicker infused his commentary with the force of his personality, which few others could do.) It was strange, then, that when blogging became big, Panicker wasn't in the forefront of things, having given up cricket writing to take up an assignment in New York.
Well, better late than later. The inevitable has happened, and Prem Panicker is now part of the blogosphere. Please do check out Fourth Umpire. Fun will happen.
