Leave us them fatties alone

The New York Times reports that fat people may just be causing global warming:

[The] latest contribution to the obesity debate comes in an article by Sheldon H. Jacobson of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and his doctoral student, Laura McLay. Their paper, published in the current issue of The Engineering Economist, calculates how much extra gasoline is used to transport Americans now that they have grown fatter. The answer, they said, is a billion gallons a year.
Somewhere, I fancy, Al Gore is pushing Tipper Gore into a gym.

Meanwhile, Jacob Sullum of Reason magazine says that we should "lay off the fatties." I quite agree. If I want a cheeseburger, what's your problem? Indeed, if I want four cheeseburgers and three servings of French fries and then 44 hot chocolate fudges, what's your problem? Huh?

After all, it's not like smoking: I've never heard of passive obesity. And I'm sure more gasoline is expended on men than women, because they're heavier: so should we rail against maleness as well? And yes, I know you'll point out here that being male is not a matter of choice, but being fat often is. Well, dear reader, when it comes to cheeseburgers, free will disappears.

You can make out I had a good day at the gym, can't you? "Your upper body strength has imcreased," my trainer said to me, "but don't you feel uncomfortable exercising with a pillow tied to your stomach?"
