The contradictions of Diwali

Gautam Chikermane writes in the Indian Express:
For all its sound and light, celebration and aspiration, I find the way we celebrate Diwali today a contradiction in finance. We offer prayers to Lakshmi, goddess of wealth, and, like all good sinners, do things that defy our prayers, our goals, our well being. And it’s not moral science I’m talking about, but hard, tangible, touchable and probably unchanging attitudes. Four in particular.
