The stirrings

"We all came out of Gogol's overcoat," Fyodor Dostoevsky is reputed to have once said, referring, of course, to Nikolai Gogol's masterful short story, "The Overcoat". Chandrahas Choudhury has an appreciation of the story here, setting it up and also giving us the passage that Jane Smiley described as the moment "when literature enters the modern world".
